Farm to School - Go Columbus Agriculture

What is Farm to School?

Farm to School connects young people with wholesome, locally-grown food right here in Ohio. Through our program, students gain hands-on experiences with agriculture, discover where their meals come from, and develop lifelong healthy eating habits.

Our work brings together three essential components that create lasting impact: purchasing food from local growers for school cafeterias, establishing vibrant school gardens where students can dig in and learn, and providing engaging education about agriculture, nutrition, and sustainability.

🥬

Local Food Procurement

We connect schools with Ohio farmers to bring fresh, seasonal produce directly to cafeteria trays, supporting our local food economy.

🌱

School Gardens

Students grow their own food in outdoor learning spaces, discovering the joy of planting, tending, and harvesting real crops.

📚

Agriculture Education

Interactive lessons teach students about farming, nutrition, environmental stewardship, and the journey from seed to plate.

Why Farm to School Matters for Ohio

Farm to School creates a win for everyone involved. Research consistently shows that when we invest in connecting young people with local agriculture, the benefits ripple throughout our entire community.

Students Thrive

Young people who participate in Farm to School programs show improved nutrition, better academic performance, and stronger connections to their community. They're more willing to try new vegetables, understand healthy choices, and carry these positive habits into adulthood.

Farmers Prosper

Ohio farmers gain reliable institutional customers, opening new markets and strengthening farm businesses. This stable income helps local agricultural operations grow and succeed while keeping farmland productive in our region.

Communities Flourish

When schools buy from local producers, those dollars circulate through our local economy, creating jobs and building regional food systems. Farm to School strengthens the fabric of our communities by connecting neighbors, supporting local businesses, and creating shared investment in our collective future.

How Farm to School Works in Columbus

At Go Columbus Agriculture, we bring Farm to School to life through partnerships with schools throughout the Linden area and beyond. Here's how we make it happen:

1. Building Partnerships

We work directly with school administrators, food service directors, and teachers to understand their needs and goals. Every school is different, and we tailor our approach to fit.

2. Connecting with Local Growers

We've established relationships with Ohio farmers who grow the fresh produce our schools need. We handle the logistics of getting seasonal vegetables from local fields to school kitchens.

3. Creating Garden Classrooms

Our team helps schools establish and maintain thriving gardens where students gain hands-on growing experience. We provide technical support, curriculum resources, and ongoing guidance.

4. Delivering Educational Programming

Through farm visits, classroom lessons, taste tests, and special events, we bring agriculture to life for students. Our programming connects to STEM standards and brings real-world learning into the school day.

Our Impact in the Community

Since launching our Farm to School initiative, we've created meaningful connections between Columbus students and Ohio agriculture. Our work continues to grow each year as more schools discover the value of local food and hands-on learning.

National Farm to School Month

Every October, we join schools and communities across the nation in celebrating Farm to School Month. This designated time highlights the connections between students, local food, and agriculture through special activities, events, and educational programming.

In Ohio, schools participate in coordinated events like the Great Apple Crunch, where thousands of students simultaneously bite into locally-grown apples. It's a delicious demonstration of our collective commitment to supporting Ohio agriculture and healthy eating.

During Farm to School Month, partner schools host harvest festivals, welcome farmer guests, prepare special local food meals, and engage in educational activities that spotlight agriculture. It's an exciting time that brings the entire school community together around fresh, local food.
